How are powder coatings made?

2nd February 2011

Since there are no liquid resins or solvents in the powder formulations, a process called "Melt Mixing" is used. With this method, the raw materials are melted together under high shear conditions, to give a high degree of dispersion. This develops the maximum physical properties and colour development.

Manufacturing process steps

1 Weigh out raw materials per formula card.

2 Charge "Dry Blender".

3 "Dry Blend".

4 Quality control checks for specified properties.

5. If quality control check is OK, charge "Melt Mixer". If quality check is not OK, make corrections at Step 2.

6 "Melt Mix".

7 Quality control check for specified properties.

8 If quality control check is OK, charge Milling Operation. If quality check is not OK, make corrections at Step 2, 3 or 6.

9 Grind and classify flake into powder.

10 Quality control check for specified properties.

11 If quality control check is OK, package finished product . If quality control check is not OK, make corrections at Step 2, 3, 6 or 9.
