VOCs

15th December 2010

Coatings provide a positive environmental function by protecting and preserving surfaces. They may contain Volatile Organic Compounds - VOCs.

VOCs are materials which evaporate readily from commonly occurring sources such as vehicle exhausts, cleaning products, furniture polishes and fabric conditioners. They include solvents used in coatings as well as thinners and brush cleaners. In the prescence of sunlight, these VOCs can react with nitrogen oxides to produce ground level ozone and photochemical smog. These, in turn, can contribute to pollution of the atmosphere.

The BCF provides guidance and co-ordinates various issues concerning VOCs.

The coatings industry has been working for a number of years to significantly reduce the levels of VOCs emitted from coatings. The BCF has  worked with the UK Government, and in conjunction with its European counterpart CEPE, the European Commission, to develop legislation  with this aim. The various issues are listed below.

VOC Product Regulations - covering decorative, building and vehicle refinish coatings.

The VOC Workbook - a methodology for coatings' manufacturers to meet the requirements of the Process Guidance Note for coatings and ink manufacture, PG6/44.
